Winter sports are a lot of fun, but trying to stay warm when you’re out in the snow can be a challenging experience. If you’re sick of the feel of synthetics against your skin, but can’t live without the waterproof properties they provide, then why not try silk glove liners and silk underwear?

When you’re out on the slopes the last thing you want to worry about is being too cold, or feeling clammy because the synthetic under garments you chose for the day aren’t breathable enough to cope with the fact that you’re sweating from exertion in your ski-suit. Yes, you can sweat when it’s cold – even gentle ski slopes can be hard work if you’re a novice!

Silk is lightweight, breathable, and thin enough that it works well as a layer under heavier, waterproof materials. Silk glove liners are great for protecting your hands and keeping them dry, and the feeling of comfort offered by silk underwear is hard to deny.

If you have sensitive skin, or suffer from eczema or other similar conditions, then you may find that having natural fabrics act as a buffer helps to reduce the symptoms of your condition. This can make your skiing trip a much more enjoyable experience.

One of the often overlooked properties of silk glove liners is insulation. Silk may not be thick or heavy, but it is great at keeping heat in. The same can be said for snug silk underwear, too. When you put on silk glove liners, you’re adding an extra layer between you and the elements. It may be a thin and breathable layer, but it’s a layer nonetheless. This means that more air (and more heat) is trapped between you and the thicker outer gloves. When you’re outside in the snow for a prolonged period of time, this makes all the difference.

It’s for this reason that silk is so popular with skiers. You can find silk woven into almost every kind of sporting garment – not just silk underwear, but vests, gloves, and even socks. The blend of strength, breathability, and comfort is hard to beat.

There are a few downsides to silk – it is more expensive than many synthetics, and it does require special attention on laundry day, but, if it’s cared for correctly it will last for many years, so it is a great investment. Especially if you’re serious about your chosen sport. In addition, specialist garments such as silk glove liners aren’t exactly going to be subjected to a lot of wear and tear. Most of the time, your glove liners will be covered by your primary pair of gloves so they’re unlikely to become soiled or damaged in day to day use.

Naturally, silk underwear will require more careful cleaning attention, but the trade off there is extra comfort. Given the choice between being cold or clammy, or enjoying the feeling of silk against your skin while you’re out in the biting cold, I’m willing to bet that most people will choose the silk!

My family is from Minnesota. When we travel people often ask us about the legendary Minnesota winters. This is usually followed up by comments such as how can you live there. Today it is 85 degrees and I am writing this article while sitting on my pontoon boat on a lake in northern Minnesota. It is September 2, 2011 and I know Minnesota is actually a real nice place for much of the year. The winters here do get difficult especially when the hours of daylight get shorter and shoveling snow becomes a daily routine. The best part about living in a climate where there are extreme temperature and climate changes is watching the changes take place around you.

In a few weeks I will come back to the lake cabin and my father and I will begin preparing the cabin for winter. This year will be a little different. My son will start learning the daunting task of taking in the dock and pulling in the pontoon boat before the lake freezes. These are skills that are past along from generation to generation. Soon my father will no longer be able to help and it will be my son and I.

Last year we prepared the cabin for winter in the rain. It was a cool 50 degrees and I was in waiters that’s had sprung a leak. Standing out in the water while dismantling the dock in leaking waiters I reflected on the warmer days of the previous summer. After all of the items at the cabin are secured for winter we close it down and hope that winter treats the cabin well. The lake cabin was built in the 1920’s. My father purchased it from one of the original owners who had built the cabin with her husband. He had passed on several years prior. It is not a fancy cabin it looks pretty much like it did 80 years ago. There is no running water and we use an old fashioned out house. However, this is my favorite place on earth I would not trade the cabin for anything.

In January my wife, kids and I usually make a trip to the cabin to check on it. There is too much snow in the driveway so we pack all of our belongings into a sled and pull it down to the cabin. We open up the cabin and look at the temperature. It oftentimes is 20 degrees below zero when we arrive. I start up the fireplace and begin the long task of heating the cabin to a comfortable level. It might take 8 hours until it reaches 60 degrees. We spend part most of the day outside while the stove does its work to warm the place up. If it has been a bad winter I will climb up onto the roof and shovel 5 feet of snow off. Eventually the sun will set and it is time to prepare for a cold night.

Just before we go to bed I stoke the fireplace with a lot of wood and hope it keeps the heat coming. Unfortunately it is so cold outside that we can feel the temperature drop as the night goes on. I used to have to get up several times and keep putting wood in the fireplace but several years ago we began using electric blankets and it changed the cabin experience. Instead of getting up so many times during the night to put wood in the fireplace we simply lean over and turn our electric blankets on. We have one on each bed and the heat from the blankets allows us to stay warm enough to make it until morning. Eventually I do have to crawl out of the heated blanket to put more wood in the fireplace but that is the price I pay for having the honor of checking on the cabin. Another handy item at the cabin in the winter is an electric throw blanket. We can sit on the couch and enjoy the heat while relaxing over a warm cup of coffee.

If you ever go to a primitive lake cabin in the winter (that has electricity) do not forget to pack you electric blanket and other warming products!!

Throughout college, adults would always tell me, “These are the best years of your life! Don’t forget that!” and I always wondered, “Don’t they remember all of the homework, the tests, and the stress of being a student?” College is tough, for sure. As a recent graduate, there were many times during my college career where I thought about how nice it would be to have a Sunday afternoon without homework. How relaxing it would be to come home and relax instead of doing homework until 1am. But now that I am at that point in my life where I am working with a job in the “real world,” I realize what the adults told me was kind of true. While I believe that every year has the potential to be the best year of your life with the right mindset and motivation, in terms of sleep, I do not think I will ever have better slumbers than the sleep I had in school.
In college, I was a member of a sorority and I chose to live in the sorority house for 3 of my 4 years. Part of the deal when you choose to live in a Greek house is that not everyone gets a bed in their bedroom. Some people sleep in what’s called a “cold dorm” where a large room is filled with bunk beds and the windows are left open to let cold air in. A few of my friends hated the cold dorm while others swore by it. I was one of the ones who absolutely loved sleeping in the cold dorm, mostly because I had an electric blanket. It made a huge difference in how I slept and I would recommend it to everyone.

3 REASONS WHY I LOVE MY ELECTRIC BLANKET:

3. You fall asleep faster when it is cold. When it is cold outside, usually it is a bit chillier inside than normal. If you want to keep the heat turned down in your bedroom, but you hate how long it takes to get warm enough to sleep, use an electric blanket. When I used my electric blanket in the cold dorm, it made it so much easier to fall asleep quickly because I was warm and toasty under my blankets. Whenever I forgot to turn on the electric blanket, I spent a lot of time trying to warm up before I could fall asleep.
2. You sleep like a rock. Seriously. It feels like hibernating. Now that I am no longer sleeping in the cold dorm, I have to say that I am not getting as good of sleep as I did when I slept in the cold with the electric blanket. I toss and turn more when I sleep in a warmer room and it is harder for me to wake up.
1. It makes me happy when I am going to sleep. Nothing feels cozier than sliding into a warm bed under piles of blankets after a long night of studying. It’s the perfect place to sleep.
Author Bio: Stacie Grissom is a recent college graduate and in her free time, Stacie loves to run, sew, and play with her three-legged dog, Bridget.
